Tokio Hotel
Jaminthevan.com article

imagebam.com

Way back in 2011 we got an offer from the radio station 98.7 to pull into the alley behind The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and film the band Switchfoot. Now, none of us were at the time Switchfoot fans or in any way knowledgeable about Switchfoot. Myself, I’d never heard of them. We were able to look at their social media accounts and surmised that they had a pretty big following. However, we were new to the whole internet business game, and we had up until then only filmed bands that were on the local level, small followings, climbing their way up. The day we released Switchfoot’s session, I will never forget. We thought we’d made it. Everytime I clicked refresh on our Facebook page fifty new people had liked it. It didn’t matter that a lot of them were conservative Christians who had stumbled upon our site because we filmed a Jesus rock band... we were stoked.

Since then we’ve obviously gone on to film plenty of big named musicians, and our social media following has grown along with us. Yet the day we taped Tokio Hotel still managed to blow my mind. I don’t even think the band retweeted our tweet about us filming them. Some fan just saw it, retweeted it and then it was in the hands of their millions of minions and fan sites gallore. They have an army of devoted girls and boys chomping at the bit to watch them do anything, like literally anything. They got stoked at pictures of the band standing in an alley using their cell phones. So heaven help the internet when we drop these videos. Let the Tokio Hotelaholics loose. It’s time to break the web...

Exclusive: Tokio Hotel Plays 2 Songs at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve
Billboard.com article

imagebam.com

Fresh off the release of their fifth full-length Kings of Suburbia, German band Tokio Hotel performed two songs from the album in front of a massive crowd at Berlin's famous Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve. Today Billboard is exclusively premiering footage from the show, which includes the band playing their latest single, "Love Who Loves You Back", and their first live performance of "Feel It All".

The twin brothers in Tokio Hotel -- Bill and Tom Kaulitz -- moved from Germany to Los Angeles before making Kings of Suburbia. Bill calls this period "the first real life we've ever had. We had come out of school at 15, started the band, and from that moment on, there was no private life, only Tokio Hotel." In L.A., the German superstars were relatively unknown. Tom says, "We wanted to do regular stuff, things we couldn't do before. I was riding my bike, bought groceries, and went to the DMV. It was great."

The band wasn't necessarily looking to play a show in Berlin on New Year's Eve. "Usually we reserve that night to party," Bill jokes, "But it was hard to say no when you get to perform in front of more than half a million people!"

"We had a blast," he continues. "All of our friends and family were there. We got super drunk after the performance and went out all night. We left the last club at 6:30 in the morning. It was definitely a night to remember!"

Interview | Tokio Hotel
Schonmagazine.com article

imagebam.com imagebam.com imagebam.com

After the worldwide success of their last albums, German pop phenomenon Tokio Hotel moved to Los Angeles and took a year off. Now, Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing and Gustav Schäfer are back to music scene with their new album Kings Of Suburbia. The band sits down with Schön! to talk about their dreams, their advice and parents.

What do you love most about Los Angeles?
Tom: For me, it’s the freedom we have in California. When we left Germany, it was the very first time that we were able to live a regular life. Suddenly, we were able to do whatever we wanted to do. That was a great feeling, it was completely different from our life in Europe.
Bill: I love the weather so much. It’s sunny everyday and it feels like we’re constantly on holidays. But there’s is also a negative aspect about the weather in Los Angeles – people become a bit lazy with fashion. Their outfits can be a bit boring. That´s hard for me, because I´m really interested in fashion.

Do you remember your very first costume on stage?
Bill: I do. When we started performing, we had a concert in our hometown Magdeburg. For this concert, I was wearing a skirt. I still remember that I was wearing this extraordinary garment in combination with a homemade t-shirt and Dr. Martens. We had no money left, so I often created my own costumes.

Tell me about your biggest dream that became true?
Bill: We always wanted to be successful with our music. My brother and I were seven when we started writing our own songs. Back in the days, we didn’t have any producer or record company supporting us in our hometown. Together with Georg and Gustav, we have been a band for such a long time – more than fourteen years now.

So you never thought it would be possible?
Bill: Definitely not. It was just a dream and we are so blessed that it became true some years later. Now, we are living this dream and we are more than happy about it.

What does your family think about your career?
Tom: They hate us. No, I´m just joking.
Bill: They are really happy for us, actually. Our mum is really creative and our stepfather plays the guitar in a band. It sounds funny, but we are living their dream as well. They are really supportive and we have got a strong connection to our family. We have always been focused on creativity; music was an important part of us from an early age.

If you didn’t have this enormous success with Tokio Hotel, where do you think you’d be right now?
Tom: Probably at home without any plans what to do. No, I´m just joking again. Hopefully, I would have started something creative? I can´t imagine sitting in an office the whole day. When I was younger, I always wanted to be a lawyer or a porn star.

A career as a porn star?
Tom: Probably working as a lawyer and a porn star as spare-time work. Great idea, isn´t it?

Back to reality: can you describe the process of preparing a new album?
Bill: We started very slowly after taking a year off. We just needed some time for our creative side, as well as taking time to move to the United States. After a while, we wanted to create a new album: we flew to our studio in New York to start working on the record. For the first time, we produced absolutely everything on our own. Every song was written by us.

Why?
Bill: Nearly no one understood what we wanted to do with our new album. Normally, we record new songs by playing the guitar. This time it was different – Tom was more interested in synthesizers. In the end, the album sounded more electronic than Tokio Hotel has ever sounded previously. It sounds like the nightlife of Los Angeles.

Is there any piece of advice you would have liked to hear at the beginning of your career?
Bill: Read every contract carefully. Retrospectively, I wouldn´t have changed anything. For sure, we were also making lots of mistakes during the last couple of years. I think we are still making mistakes, aren’t we?
Tom: Generally speaking, we were extremely lucky.
Bill: But there is a process that we have learned: keeping the balance between career and privacy. We’ve always wanted to keep it this way, but it hasn´t always been easy.

Because of your fan base? Has it changed during the last couple of years?
Bill: Lots of guys listen to our music now. Our management just told us that there are a lot of boys who watch our videos on YouTube. Back in the days, we almost felt as if there were only teenage girls at our concerts.

Are there any differences between American and European Fans?
Bill: Not really. It feels like a huge family for us. They are connected online from all over the world, it´s so nice to see that.
Tom: Unfortunately, we haven´t met our American fans for a while. That´s the reason why we would like to start a tour in the United States.

Have you ever thought about coming home to Europe?
Tom: Georg and Gustav still live in Germany. Bill and I, we love life in Los Angeles. At the moment, there is no reason for us to move back to Europe. We spend so much time in airplanes – it almost feels as if we are living on the road. Maybe one day, we´ll move back to Germany. Italy or Mexico would be nice as well.

Is there anything in show business you are afraid of?
Bill: We have seen a lot during the last couple of years and we do have an idea of how to manage show business – I feel like we’ve figured it out. The most important thing is just that we are always together. We are a family. As long as my brother and my band are next to me, I feel like if I can deal with everything.

What moment of your career are you most proud of?
Bill: It´s really hard to choose: I´m proud that we won a VMA in 2008. It still feels so unreal.
Tom: I felt proud when we finished our new album.

What´s next for Tokio Hotel?
Bill: We will start the first part of our world tour in March. London will be our first stop. Our world tour will be more intimate than before, we want to play in smaller clubs this time. We will just go everywhere to see our fans. It will be great.

Tokio Hotel Schools You In The Fine Art Of Turning An After-Party Into A Single
Mtv.com article

imagebam.com

These are some dedicated dudes.

There’s an old saying that one should not mix business with pleasure — an old saying that Tokio Hotel decidedly does not truck with. In fact, for their most recent record, Kings of Suburbia, business and pleasure worked together in harmony to create their new electronic sound.

"‘Feel It All’ is one of those songs that we wrote at an after-party," Bill Kaulitz told MTV News of the band’s second single, for which the guys are primed to shoot a new video any day now in Germany.

These days, the band’s home base is L.A, where they were disappointed to find that the clubs close at 2 a.m. Therefore, they often went to the studio to keep the party alive into the wee hours.

"It’s one of those songs where you just don’t want the party to end and it’s an after-hour party song and you just gotta go all night," Kaulitz added. It’s a song inspired by their party to soundtrack your next party.

When was the last time you stayed out all night listening to Tokio Hotel? Let us know in the comments!

EXCLUSIVE: Tokio Hotel Returns with Kings of Suburbia and a New World Tour
Bandsintown.com article

imagebam.com imagebam.com imagebam.com imagebam.com imagebam.com imagebam.com

Band Members: Bill Kaulitz (Lead Vocalist), Tom Kaulitz (Guitarist), Gustav Schäfer (Drummer) and Georg Listing (Bassist)

Following their recent show at The Viper Room in LA, we had the rare opportunity to sit down with German pop rockers Tokio Hotel, whose fan base, the Aliens, are known for being extremely dedicated. The band just released their first record in five years, Kings of Suburbia, which took them in a different direction with a new sound and a set of electronic, dance-oriented songs. They are gearing up for their new world tour "Feel It All: The Club Experience" in March 2015. Be sure to track Tokio Hotel on Bandsintown so you’re the first to know when tickets go on sale near you.

We are also offering 5 lucky Tokio Hotel fans a chance to win an exclusive signed Polaroid from the band! To enter, simply send a tweet to @Bandsintown & @decodeltd with the hashtag #THxBIT. We’ll randomly select 5 winners and alert them on Twitter next week!

It’s been five years since you’ve put out an album. What are your thoughts on the new ways artists have to promote themselves, as well as all the new streaming services?
Bill: I feel like it’s good and bad. It’s good that you have your own kind of media so you can put out whatever you want and communicate with your fans directly without having someone come in between. You can actually communicate with your fan base and you can clean up shit that has been said about you, which is great. On the other hand, it’s sad a lot of big magazines don’t exist anymore, or they don’t have the money to do great photo productions anymore. Also CDs, downloads, streaming, I hate it. We do it because you have to do it but I hate that stuff. For me, it’s best to buy a CD. We released a vinyl from our record. We had a cassette as well. We like all of those formats and we put so much thought and work into our videos and artwork but people don’t even see it anymore. That’s the bad part about it. I can live with social media, but we should stop the illegal downloads and go back to CDs. That would be my perfect world.

How would you describe your relationship with your fans and how you see that changing now that your sound has changed and you’re moving to a more electronic music audience?
Bill: Some people grew with us. They’re our age because we were super young when we started. They now have a different taste in music, they see things differently just like we do. We have a strong fan base so it’s like going on an adventure with us. Our fans are very, very supportive – we have the best fans ever! They are very intense. We gained some new fans as well – a lot more guys. Back in the day it was always girls and now we see on YouTube that we have 50% guys watching our videos!
Tom: Now that we are a little older and a little uglier, guys are more open to our music.
Bill: Which is great! We don’t have a target audience or someone we go after. Whoever enjoys [our] music and the stuff we do, it’s like, "Welcome to our shows!" We then grow our fan base a little bit.

What do you think about older fans commenting, upset about the changing sound?
Bill: I expected it, there are people that like to complain about anything. Even if we had created the same album we did a couple of years ago, we would’ve heard, "Oh my God, they didn’t change at all! The same old shit, they didn’t put any work into it." We don’t care about that, we never really did. With Kings of Suburbia, we wanted to make an album that we enjoy; that reflects our tastes and the music we want to make. For us, it’s all about being authentic. If you go straight to what you’ve done for so many years and just keep doing that, that’s not authentic. We’re all people, we change and life is changing us and we get inspired by different things. I can’t stick to the same sound with every album. We want to keep it fresh and do what we enjoy.

What music and artists inspire you, particularly in the creation of this album? Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?
Tom: There are plenty of people I would love to collaborate with but it’s hard to say who inspired us for this record because we were producing it over four years. I’m really into Chet Faker right now and then there are our childhood heroes Aerosmith and Depeche Mode. It’s so different, we don’t have one genre that we love. As artists and musicians, we are more into great productions and good songs, no matter the artist. Daft Punk would be great to collaborate with, that would be amazing.

Kings of Suburbia marks the first time you produced an album yourself; was it refreshing having all that control?
Tom: It was refreshing, and really intense, and a lot of work. Totally a new experience. That’s why it took us such a long time, because we made everything on our own; like writing the songs, producing, playing, everything.
Bill: It’s the best thing we could have done. I’m super happy with it - to have that freedom, and to not have to rely on a good producer and someone you might not even want to work with. We collaborated with a couple of songwriters and producers on this album but in general we just made so much on our own. Especially in vocal production.
Tom: It started out of a frustration, because initially we met up with people and started to work on stuff but it didn’t feel right and it was not music we wanted to do. Then we decided, "Let’s build a home studio!" where we started from the very beginning. "Stormy Weather" was one of the first songs that we came up with and it was the guide for the whole record. Because of our frustration, it turned out to be amazing.

On your "TOKIO HOTEL TV" episode, you mentioned the album was ready to come out last year, but then you started writing again. Is the album that’s out now from the first or second batch, or a combination?
Bill: It’s a combination; a lot of songs weren’t on the record a year ago when we wanted to put it out. Like "Love Who Loves You Back" and "Run Run Run" – we didn’t have these songs in the beginning. We were in the studio and amazing things were happening. I was like, "We need more time because the material we are making right now is so good we can’t miss out on it." Really it’s a best out of four years of writing and making music.

Your upcoming tour is called "The Club Experience". Does this mean you’ll be playing smaller venues? Do you prefer smaller spaces to the big arena shows?
Bill: Not necessarily, I love to play in front of a lot of people. I like big stages. We wanted to change it up, and since the album is so electronic, we want to turn a live club into a night club; between 1,000 -2,000 people [size venues]. Its going to be small; like a night where you go and party rather than a normal concert. We thought it would be cool to have smaller venues; our fans requested that a lot. They want to see us and meet us, so the whole concept is a little different. And then we hit the arenas by the end of the year.

How did you manage to assemble such a great team behind you - with representation from De-Code LTD, distribution from Universal, publicity and marketing from 42 West and Total Assault, etc..? What advice can you share on how to choose the right partners to manage a musician’s career?
Bill: Interscope was involved with our last album but we didn’t like their work so we got out of the contract for this album. Sometimes you work with big people and big companies and that’s not always the right choice. We now work with William Morris Agency for live booking, they’re great. It always depends; it’s about the vision and the vision you have as a band and that’s how we pick our people. We never had a classic management, we always had people on our payroll just to keep everything going but the decisions we always make ourselves. Basically everything that happens is on our table.
Tom: We cleaned it up a bit too. For this record, we had the video directors, to the people making the clothing and taking pictures for the album, and the artwork... everything is pretty much with the label in the U.S.; friends and people we’ve known for a long time, and that love the band, are passionate about it and understand the project.
Bill: I hate to deal with any egos. We just wanted to work with people that are excited about the band and have the same vision. In Europe, we are still with Universal Music. It really depends on how you get along and if it works out. It’s not always the biggest company that works best, for sure.

You already put out three music videos for the new album. How much input did you have in those concepts?
Bill: A lot! We made "Run Run Run" with one of our close friends, Gianluca Fellini. For that song it was perfect because he’s very good at capturing intimate situations and very pure stuff; it was such a passion project for both of us. We worked with Kris Moyes for "Girl Got A Gun" - we wanted to do something different and funky, which led to the idea of including transgenders. With "Love Who Loves You Back", I wanted to film a massive orgy, but then I told the guy no, I want to be INVOLVED in the orgy – not just singing in the background! He said, "I didn’t know you would do that... great let’s do it."

What’s a typical gig day like for you?
Tom: Now that we’re going on tour it’s going to be: get up sometime in the afternoon, soundcheck, and after that we meet the fans. Next city we get up, soundcheck, meet the fans, play; maybe some table tennis in between. Pretty much every day, exactly the same.
Bill: It’s exhausting though. People don’t know how exhausting a tour is. We are just trying to stay healthy, so no one gets sick cause it’s such a long time. You always sleep on a bus, you never have a real room or a nice shower.
Tom: You don’t have a lot of daylight.

Are there any cities you look forward to playing in, or do they all kind of seem the same?
Tom: It’s more about the venue. In Paris we have a great venue so I’m looking forward to Paris.
Bill: This tour we are playing in really special venues. Like in Hamburg, a beautiful church. We either have outstanding cool locations or legendary clubs. It’s going to be interesting, I think they’re all going to have very shitty backstage rooms.

Are there any phone apps you can’t live without?
Bill: Instagram, InstaSize, Uber, WhatsApp.
Tom: I’m really old school. I’m not using anything.
Bill: He doesn’t even have an Instagram! He only takes his phone to text or make a call.
Tom: I have a news app I’m always looking into.

Watch Tokio Hotel Explain A Decade Of Their Best And Most Horrible Fashion Choices, Starting From 2005
Mtv.com article

imagebam.com

Spoiler alert: they didn't always color coordinate!

Everyone has those photos in their timeline, the ones where you are like, "what was I thinking?" Now imagine being in Tokio Hotel‘s universe, where your look changes practically every six months, and this year’s spiked hair and silver jacket is last year’s oversized jersey.

MTV News sat down with the Kings Of Suburbia and asked them to play fashion flashback with their old photos. Thankfully they were totally game to explain their best and most questionable looks.

VIVA Comet Awards, Oberhausen, Germany, 2005
Bill Kaulitz: It was our first awards show... obviously we didn’t talk about what we were going to wear. We just put on whatever... I wouldn’t wear that again, but I like that picture a lot. I can see the excitement.

Music Meets Media, Romania, 2006
Kaulitz: I’m wearing a Dior jacket, and it’s actually a nice jacket... but the rest is horrible.

Cinema For Peace, Berlin, 2007
Kaulitz: That’s actually not bad. I would probably wear that again... I don’t like the hair anymore, but I think the outfit is not too bad.

"TRL," New York, 2008
Kaulitz: That was in America. We were there performing, and I like my orange jacket! I hate the t-shirt now.

2009 MTV EMA, Berlin
Kaulitz: I like our outfits. I think they are cool. I like Gustav’s blonde hair, I like him like that.

VIVA Comet Awards, Oberhausen, Germany, 2010
Kaulitz: Great outfit, I’m wearing Dior again.

Tokio Hotel Would Love To Jam With Aerosmith, David Bowie And Jessica Alba?
Mtv.com article

They kind of don't even care if she sings or not.

Everyone musician has one. That list they keep in their head of all the amazing artists they’d love to collaborate with if they could only get, you know, Madonna on the phone.

Tokio Hotel are no different. As they gear up for a tour in support of Kings of Suburbia, the boys recently sat down with MTV News to talk about their bucket list and some of the names on it might surprise you.

Steven Tyler, Or All Of Aerosmith
Tom Kaulitz: Sometimes you like people and then you meet them and you don’t like them anymore. It’s always hard to tell. Like once you want to work with somebody, it has to fit on a personal level as well. I don’t know, like, for us, our childhood heroes are like Aerosmith so that’s [someone] that would be amazing to work with, you know, Steven Tyler or Aerosmith as a whole band.

Depeche Mode, David Bowie And... No D-Bags
Bill Kaulitz: Depeche Mode or David Bowie, there are a lot of people that would be just amazing. But as Tom said, sometimes you’re scared to meet your heroes because then you meet them and you’re like, ‘Oh, they suck, personally they just suck,’ and then you don’t want to work with them anymore. It happened to me so many times where I liked someone, I went to a show and met them afterwards, and we realized ‘Oh, these are douchebags.’ I don’t even wanna do anything with them.

Jessica Alba, Does She Make Music?
Tom: Is Jessica Alba doing music? I mean that would be a great collaboration as well.

Dirty Underwear And Naked Pics? Tokio Hotel Fans Have Given Them Some Pretty NSFW Gifts
Mtv.com article

imagebam.com

Aliens are dedicated folks.

Tokio Hotel‘s fan army, the Aliens, have a rep for being extremely dedicated. And by extremely dedicated we mean EXTREME (imagine that in energy drink font).

Tokio Hotel recently took a break from pounding the pavement for their first record in five years, Kings Of Suburbia, to share some of their craziest fan stories with MTV News. Warning: Used underwear and naked photos are involved. Oh, and according to Tom, Georg just found out he’s a father. (We assume he’s kidding, but if not, congrats to the lucky lady!)

Bill also shouted out some of Tokio Hotel’s most hardcore fans — the South American Aliens: "In South America it was super crazy — they are always very intense," he said.

And it’s an intensity and dedication Tokio Hotel’s been feeling since the beginning: "I think our fans were just growing with us, when we started we were so young... we were 15, 17, and I feel like a lot of our fans were our age, and I feel that they just changed like we did; they grew up with us listening to our music," Bill explained. "That was a while ago, and hearing that... people grew up with our music is so weird for us because we still feel like we just started. But I also feel like we gain new people, there are a lot more guys listening to our music now. We are getting more people and we still have our amazing fan base."

FYI, guys — Gustav is taken, so maybe in the future send all thongs and snaps to the Kaulitz Twins.

Tokio Hotel @ Viper Room
Iamhighvoltage.com article

imagebam.com imagebam.com

Tokio Hotel | Viper Room (West Hollywood, CA) | January 15, 2015 |

A lot of secret things happen in Los Angeles each night, that is unless you’re a super fan. When word leaked of a secret Tokio Hotel show at the Viper Room, "Aliens" (that’s what Tokio Hotel fans call themselves) began to queue up in the early afternoon hours for a chance at maybe getting into the invite-only performance.

You see, Tokio Hotel is German rock-pop band consisting of twin brothers Bill Kaulitz (vocalist) and Tom Kaulitz (guitarist), drummer Gustav Schäfer and bassist Georg Listing. Forming in 2001 these guys are no stranger to the music scene. They just weren’t widely known here in the United States until winning an MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for Best New Artist in 2008.

Now the Viper Room is a smaller venue, only holding around 225 if they squeeze ‘em in, and this show was definitely at capacity. Announcing their new world tour, Tokio Hotel treated fans to an all acoustic session, playing just five songs. As soon as the curtain opened a sea of mobile phones went up; Tokio Hotel had their die-hard Aliens in the palm of their hands until their final note singing back every line. The majority of the set featured songs off their previously released album Kings Of Suburbia but the band pleased fans with a couple old tracks as well. Following the set, fans were treated to a meet and greet and for many fans this was up to eight years in the making.

For this newcomer, the energy of this show was addicting. For the fans, it will surely be a concert to remember. Tokio Hotel’s "Feel It All World Tour 2015" officially begins March 16, 2015 in London.

The Comeback Kids
Bumfdigital.com article

imagebam.com

On October 3 2014 German rock band Tokio Hotel released their long awaited fifth studio album entitled "Kings of Suburbia". The new album is an electronic album that has 15 tracks. This release is nothing like any of their previous albums. Since the release the album as gone number 1 on iTunes, and pre-sales in a various countries. The band plans to head out on a world tour on June 6th. Kings of Suburbia is filled with sexually fueled lyrics and heavy electronic beats. This album has a noticeable 80’s dance feel to it with songs like the debut track "Love Who, Loves You Back". The album is very well produced and the lyrical content is slightly lacking but for the most part we were moved by the beats. "Run, Run, Run" is a piano ballad that we really liked, and probably the best song on the album. "Covered In Gold" is a great ballad if you like to dance and love the autotuned laced lyrics. This album is very eclectic in its sound as well as corresponding music videos. The fellas are really stretching their creativity to new heights. We’re glad to see that they came back with something new and slightly different then what we’re use to from Tokio Hotel. Music in this day and age can be pretty challenging, and most bands tend to stick to only what works and that’s it. They took a risk and we think it’ll pay off for them. Kings of Suburbia is a fairly good album, we were skeptical when reviewing this album because Tokio Hotel has had a history of receiving bad reviews for their previous work. This album is worth a listen and is great for dancing. Tokio Hotel is a global success you can’t take that away from them, We listened to their previous album "Humanoid" and we had to admit it, it was a teen driven, pop album. Bill is a great vocalist, he can really belt out those high notes and has talent to back it. Kings of Suburbia keeps a steady tone throughout the whole album, "we wanna party" and at the end of the day the band is playing to their audience. I wouldn’t expect a 40 year old man to enjoy this album, his 18 year old tween however... A whole lot.

Tokio Hotel Invade Los Angeles With Secret Viper Room Show
Diffuser.fm article

imagebam.com

Tokio Hotel have been steadily making inroads in the states over the last decade, transitioning from rising German superstars to doing English-language albums that have captured the ears of more and more fans. On Thursday night (Jan. 15) in Los Angeles, the band got an up-close look at the fruits of their labor with a secret show at the Viper Room for their fans.

The line for the intimate club gig sprawled around both sides of the building, as fans first had the chance to take part in a meet-and-greet as the band signed items, took photos and hung out with their followers in the L.A. area. After the meet-and-greet, a DJ pumped tunes inside the venue until the band took the stage for a brief, more stripped-back performance.

The group played a no frills set as Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing and Gustav Schafer were seated throughout, playing a mix of electric and acoustic instruments. The show began with frontman Bill Kaulitz singing the well-received ‘Girl Got a Gun’, an upbeat tongue-twisty favorite from their recent ‘Kings of Suburbia’ album. ‘Louder Than Love’, the mid-tempo closer from their most recent disc, followed, with Bill Kaulitz imploring the Viper Room crowd to raise their hands.

Another newer track, ‘Never Let You Down’, showed some of Kaulitz’s range, with the singer delivering his vocals with Chris Isaak-like smoothness. The band’s current single, ‘Love Who Loves You Back’, got the biggest response of the evening, with the audience clapping along and enjoying every second of the tune. Tokio Hotel finished out the night with one of their first singles to catch U.S. listeners’ attention, ‘Automatic’, which initially appeared on the ‘Humanoid’ album.

With the Los Angeles show now complete, the band will turn their focus to international dates, which can be found here. In the meantime, check out our photo gallery from Tokio Hotel’s Viper Room show below.

Tokio Hotel Discuss Growing Up + New LP, ‘Kings of Suburbia
Diffuser.fm article

imagebam.com

Like many young bands, Tokio Hotel were just a group of musicians who wanted to follow their dreams and become rock stars. From the moment they released their debut album, ‘Schrei’, in their native Germany in 2005, the alt rockers were quickly catapulted into a whirlwind of sold-out international tours and a level of fandom that they perhaps weren’t ready for — all the while selling millions of records. And now with over a decade of experience in the music industry under their belts, Tokio Hotel are back with their first album in five years.

‘Kings of Suburbia’ — which hit the streets last October — not only shows another collection of Tokio Hotel tracks that fans have been anxiously waiting for but also focuses on a change in their musical direction. While still tackling personal and sometimes tough topics, the sound on tracks like ‘Love Who Loves You Back’ is more energetic and may even inspire you to dance around your bedroom (as I started to do while listening to it) compared to the darker music they produced in the past. Sure, there are some more somber tunes like ‘Run, Run, Run’, but there is clearly a rejuvenated spirit that runs through the LP that will bring old and new fans together for this new era of Tokio Hotel.

We had a chance to chat with singer Bill and multi-instrumentalist Tom Kaulitz (brothers), bassist Georg Listing and drummer Gustav about life, music and everything in between. Not only were they an open book about the obstacles they faced being famous in their hometown and trying to live a “normal life”, but also how much the band members have grown into men and what the next few years will be like for them.

“Now that we started going on the road again”, Bill Kaulitz told us, “it doesn’t matter where we live — in other countries or hotels or the bus or whatever. So for the next two years, it really doesn’t matter where we live”.

Find out what else Tokio Hotel revealed in our exclusive chat below:

You guys have been laying low since ‘Humanoid,’ though you’ve all been doing your own things. Can you take me back a few years to the time before you started working on ‘Kings of Suburbia’?
Bill: Well, we kind of took a break for like a year. After ‘Humanoid’, we were touring and were on the road so much, playing in South America and in Europe. So we were on the road for a while, and then for the next year we didn’t do anything. Well, Tom and I moved to Los Angeles from Germany. Then we slowly started to get back in the studio and make music again. We just got inspired by the place and everything so we started to write songs, but we weren’t working on the album constantly. But there were times for a couple of months where we weren’t in the studio. We were doing something else or just enjoying life because we didn’t have any deadline or anything like that. We just would write the songs and be in the studio and make the best possible album and release it whenever we were ready.

I was watching a few things on your YouTube channel, ‘Tokio Hotel TV,’ and one of the videos that struck me was about the reasons Bill and Tom moved to Los Angeles and how it was hard for you to actually live in Germany. Can you talk a little bit about that?
Bill: I think the whole move to America was, of course, for private reasons, and it was super necessary to to do that. I mean, it wasn’t possible for me to actually have a life outside of this band. So when we went home [to Germany], it was kind of like living in a prison the whole time. We couldn’t go outside. We couldn’t do anything.
Tom: Just to go outside, you have to run into a van and talk to all your people with bodyguards and all this. So whatever you do becomes such a big deal, you know what I mean? Doing regular stuff wouldn’t be possible.
Bill: We thought that if we wanted to take a break or if we want to live life for a moment, it’s just not possible in Germany. We’ve been trying for so long. One time, some people actually went into our house, and that was the moment we were like, “OK, we just can’t do it”. So after that we kind of moved away — and it was good. It really worked for us. And in Los Angeles, everyone has their own things to do so it’s the perfect place for us to hide and just do normal stuff.

What’s the best part about living in Los Angeles?
Bill: I love the weather — and I love the freedom.
Tom: It’s pretty much the same thing. But what I hate about L.A. is everything is closing early, and you can’t get alcohol after 2AM. It’s kind of hard because you always want to have some for parties.

And for Georg and Gustav, how has it been traveling between Germany and California?
Georg: We absolutely love Germany because our houses and friends are here, and we love to have them around us and as close as possible. But I also like to go to L.A. from time to time, but the city is a little bit too huge for me. I prefer Magdeburg [in Germany]. [Laughs]
Tom: You know what? The truth is, Georg and Gustav are loving the jetsetter life, and that’s why they like living in Magdeburg. Everybody’s recognizing them on the street and driving their huge cars and just living the life over there. [Everyone laughs]

Now onto the album. Even though it does have that Tokio Hotel signature sound, it also feels really different from what you’ve done in the past. What influenced these changes in the sound?
Bill: I feel like it was totally not planned. People think we have this huge plan on what we’re doing. We’re just going with the flow and writing and never think about anything before it. We don’t think of a certain sound or a certain way on how to approach the album or anything like that. It just comes out of us. But at the same time, we wanted to make an album that makes sense and sounds cool. That’s how you pick the songs from the 50 songs you wrote and recorded. But we never really talked about the sound. It was just something that was in development. I feel that in five years, you just change so much. Your taste level and everything is changing, so it just kind of happened.

How long did the album actually take to make?
Bill: If I were to break it down, I would say around three years. But of course, we took months off.
Tom: You’re not working constantly. Sometimes you just go into the studio, eat pizza and drink beer, then drink beer and eat pizza, especially if it’s super late. And that’s the cool thing about our jobs. [Laughs]

What are your most memorable songs on the album?
Bill: It’s ‘Stormy Weather’ because it’s the first one somebody wrote. Then after that, it was like, “OK, this is the most important song and reason to make an album”. After that song, we decided to make the new album. Before that, we were playing around with songs but didn’t really take it that seriously. But after this one, we knew it was time to make an album. So I feel that song is the most important one for this album.
Tom: It’s really, really hard to tell because I did all of the production at the time. So I spent a really long time with each song, and we put so much work into it. But when I think back, ‘Girl Got a Gun’ is a special song for me because this was one of the songs that, since production, everything went super fast. We wrote this song in a couple of hours, then I laid out the production, and everyone just loved it. So it took a day to pretty much finish the whole thing, at least we thought. So in the beginning, it was the song that everyone loved. But when we got to the end of the production, this [song] then became the one that was the most difficult for me to finish because everybody had so many changes to it. And production wise, I’m so proud of this song because there are so many details that went into it.
Georg: For me, it was ‘Great Day’ when I put down that bass line. It was this very special feeling and atmosphere. I have good memories about that time in the recording studio.
Gustav: It’s ‘Louder Than Love’ for me. I’m on the drums. And when you listen to it, you feel something special.

So the album’s been out for a few months now. When it was initially released, it seemed to chart really well in several countries. — Tokio Hotel were clearly not forgotten. How does it feel that even after all that time you guys were on a break, you put out an album and it automatically hit No. 1?
Bill: It’s amazing! It’s exactly what you want. [Everyone laughs] It’s the best. It’s the dream scenario.
Tom: If you can fly under the radar and have a life and then you put out something, then people are interested, love it and then it goes No. 1, it’s amazing. This is probably the best thing that can happen to you as an artist or a band, I think. But at the same time, we never expected that. Nowadays, people are releasing records and putting out stuff all the time, every day, and a lot of people are hustling. It’s crazy. I mean, the music industry has changed so much, and we’re still young. We’re a young band, but we’ve been in the music industry for over 10 years now.

What are some of the misconceptions that people still have about Tokio Hotel?
Bill: There are still people out there who think we’re a made up band or that we were put together by someone because “they’re all so different”, like we’re from a TV show or have some cool manager in the background. [The band] started a long time ago, and we got together because of music. And the fact is, we’re a band that started in our hometown because we loved music. And we write our own music and play our own music. We’re all musicians. Unfortunately, this sometimes gets a little lost.

Since you started when you were young, what’s something you wish you could have told your younger self?
Bill: I feel like everything makes sense, and I wouldn’t change anything in the past really. But I would probably have told myself to chill out and not take too much responsibility too early. I remember when I was 13, I thought I could be with it all and that I could handle it all. I couldn’t wait to become 18 and live by myself and do all that stuff. So I took everything very seriously. And looking back, I kind of see how being innocent and not having as many responsibilities as a kid would have been good. I always wanted that, but now I wish I would have told myself to have fun and enjoy my teenage years more.
Tom: I would probably have told myself to read the contracts that I signed. [Everyone laughs]
Georg: That’s a good idea. I would have done that as well.

What are your plans for 2015?
Bill: We always have a million plans, but I think it all comes down to how much can we do in year. So the new year looks really crazy. We just saw our schedule for the first few months and basically we’ll be in rehearsals to get our show together. We’re going to do a lot of promotion in the U.S. and then tour the rest of the world and play in every country. We’re also always making new music and are planning to make a new album.

Tokio Hotel’s latest record, ‘Kings of Suburbia’, is out now via Island. You can pick up your copy at this location — and make sure to stay up-to-date with everything happening in the band’s world, including their tour plans for 2015, at their official website.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Tokio Hotel releases Kings of Suburbia after five year break
Substreammagazine.com article

imagebam.com

After a five year break, German pop rock band Tokio Hotel, introduced a new electronic album to their international audience, Kings of Suburbia.

Founded in 2001 by singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schäfer, and bassist Georg Listing, Tokio Hotel took the world by storm in their 2007 American debut. The band decided they needed to live out their lives after touring world wide for years, so they relocated to Los Angeles. A year into their break they decided to reform and create new music to surprise fans with.

Kings of Suburbia is an electronic album featuring 15 tracks that stray away from any of the band’s previous albums. This is the band’s fifth album to date, it was released digitally Oct. 3 overseas and Oct. 6 in America. The album has gone number one on the iTunes Chart on pre-sales alone in various countries.

Tokio Hotel’s world tour, Feel It All Part One: The Club Experience, is set to hit London June 6.

Substream Magazine: So this is your first album in five years, Kings of Suburbia, how are you enjoying releasing an album again?
Bill Kaulitz: We’re totally excited. We were on the road a lot and we needed to take a break to get our lives back, but we’re really happy with how the album and record turned out.

SM: What did you do during that break?
Tom Kaulitz: We didn’t do anything, we were on break for most of it. The band has been on tour for years, since we were 15. After a year into our break though, we decided to start making music again and to work on an album.

SM: Your new album, Kings of Suburbia, is something new for the band and its fans. I used to listen to you when I was younger and I was surprised by the spin on your music. Did you enjoy experimenting with music?
BK: Just like you our taste and interests in music have changed too. You know it has been five years since our last album and it was important for our band to make music we now like and are now inspired by. It’s important for a band to change and progress and this album reflects that. It ended up a little electronic but we didn’t predict it to. The whole process of developing and producing this album was very natural.
TK: We tried new things and new music, and I don’t think that is a bad thing. We see a lot of artists now who make the same music over and over because they know its successful, but that not how music should be made. We never want to just stick to just one sound.

SM: How has Los Angeles affected your album, if it has at all?
BK: It definitely affected our music, but it was the freedom of being here that did it. It was impossible to have a private life in Europe, we just couldn’t be there any more. When we got here it was great to just be able to do stuff. We went to supermarkets, coffee shops, just normal things. We also partied a lot, maybe too much, but it was good. We’d work on the album at midnight or later because we’d be partying too much, then we’d have an after party.

SM: So you said that some artists stay with one sound because they know it’ll be successful, how did you skew away from doing the same?
BK: This album is a lot more electronic compared to our last album. We had so much time to work on it though, it wasn’t hard to express who we are now through this album. We were finally able to create our own music from writing to producing it. We tried to meet with some of our old producers but they just wanted to reattempt our old music, and that wasn’t what we wanted so we decided to do it on our own. That’s where "Stormy Weather" came in we recorded it on our own and sent it to some new producers who really liked it and wanted to work with us.

SM: What inspired this album?
BK: All the partying, the night life, and the clubs.
TK: Honestly, the freedom. We finally had the chance to live our own lives and finally experience life and this album really reflects that.
BK: Yeah I found this so interesting, I would go out and meet people who had no idea who Bill from Tokio Hotel was. It was great to meet people on that level again.

SM: I get a very sensual nightlife vibe from this album, did the band intend for that?
BK: We knew it was going to be a surprise for fans to hear this album, but we didn’t really think of a target audience for it. It was such a natural process of making music, we didn’t think of anyone outside of our home studio. I think that’s how all great music should be done, you don’t just sit down and determine you’re making a hit. You have to just be confident and love the music you are making and success will follow that.

SM: What was the most frustrating and the most rewarding elements of working on this album?
BK: I hated working with other people sometimes, I know that sounds bad. Don’t get me wrong some of the people were really amazing and inspiring, but others were just douche bags. But that kind of thing happens when you’re in the music business there are a lot of big egos to deal with. Getting to feel the final CD was worth it all in the end though, you can just feel all the work pay off.
TK: Another thing was hearing our song on the radio for once. Five years ago no played Tokio Hotel on the radio so hearing it now is great.

SM: What tracks are you most proud of on Kings of Suburbia?
BK: Oh wow that’s hard, I think it changes every day. For today I would say that "Run, Run, Run" is my favorite song, right now. It’s just so different from all of the other songs and anything we’ve ever done. Also my personal experience with it in the studio, the sounds my voice was able to make surprised me.
TK: I would say my favorite is "Girl Got A Gun". I produced the whole album, but I worked on this song the most.

SM: Feel It All Part One: The Club Experience, your world tour, starts this year in London. What are you looking forward to most on tour?
BK: We get to meet all of our fans on an intimate level. The concerts are being held in small clubs so we’ll get a chance to get to know our audience, it’s not your typical concert. We also get to talk to our fans now with the VIP tickets. I think our fans are just as excited as we are.

How Tokio Hotel Have Secured Their Reign As The “Kings Of Suburbia”
Unskinnypop.com article

imagebam.com

(PCM) Tokio Hotel released their brilliant new album "Kings Of Suburbia" last November and it has been met with both fan and critical acclaim. Listening to the album I have found that it is truly some of the band’s most honest and heartfelt work to date.

With their debut album in 2005, Tokio Hotel- -twin brothers Bill (lead singer) and Tom Kaulitz (guitar, backing vocals), Georg Listing (bass) and Gustav Schafer (drums)–rose to become the most successful German rock band of the last 20 years. 7 million copies of their releases have been sold worldwide, and with around 160 Gold and 63 Platinum awards in 68 countries and well over 100 national and international awards, Tokio Hotel is an international phenomenon.

Bill and Tom Kaulitz (25) moved to California overnight at the absolute height of their fame. Submerged in the anonymity of Los Angeles, their experiences there lent them new creativity and inspiration which they used to write and produce "Kings of Suburbia", their third international studio album.

"Kings Of Suburbia" is filled with a variety of different musical flavors and we see Tokio Hotel having the chance to explore and experiment with a variety of soundscapes including rock, pop and even various electronic elements. The album is a breath of fresh air for the band and certainly stands apart in their illustrious catalog.

From the club-heavy wallop of "Feel It All" to the softer, introspective "Run Run Run" and "Love Who Loves You Back", it’s an album that finds the Kaulitz twins pushing limits of sanity and discovery, a singular statement born out of one very important realization: their band could mirror their lives, could provide the soundtrack to the parties that never end. If it feels alive, well, that’s because Tokio Hotel were living it as they were making it.

I recently had a chance to catch up with Tokio Hotel to discuss the making of the new album, their upcoming touring plans, changes within the music industry and more.

It has been about five years since we last had any new music from Tokio Hotel, so when talking about the creative process for the new album Bill says "After the release of our last album we were not really sure what we wanted to do with our music next, so we decided to make the move to L.A.. It was there that we found that we finally had the creative freedom to do what we truly wanted to do with our music. We wanted to make something that we love and what makes us happy".

We are always curious about the mindset of the band while in the studio during the recording process. The band revealed "With "Love Who Loves You Back", the albums first single, for that song we kind of had that moment in the studio where you just know that you have something special. That song just stuck with us all day. When we were writing it and recording it and we just really couldn’t get it out of our heads. We really wanted to get it out to audiences and see if their reaction was the same. It is a way to think about experiencing love.

We also made the music video that we have always wanted to make for that song as well, so it was really a perfect fit. It is also the exact opposite of what the rest of the album is like overall. It is very pure without a lot of production, we just wanted to keep it very simple. It is a very fun song and the video was incredibly fun to make. It was something I had never done before".

Speaking of the music video for "Love Who Love You Back" Bill revealed that the idea for the video came from a film he saw called "Perfume". Bill says "In the film the character was getting a lot of hate from those around him as he was creating his perfume. As odd as it sounds, he then sprays his perfume around and it begins to turn the hate into love and then branches out into an orgy of sorts. I had always wanted to recreate that with music and now we had finally found the right song".

He goes on to say "We found the right director and he had all these people and he asked me if I even wanted to be involved. I said ‘Of course I want to be involved (laughs). He was surprised that I actually wanted to do it. I have never been involved with something like that in front of the camera so it was definitely fun. When I got home that night I felt like I was leaving a porno shoot. Making out with so many people was exhausting, but it was also a lot of fun".

I was also curious about Tokio Hotel’s upcoming touring plans, as well as, what will be going into the live show. Bill says "We are going to begin touring in March in Europe with the Feel It All World Tour. It will be a memorable experience for fans. We are still working on some of our concepts and ideas for the show, but it will be great".

When asked what the most misunderstood thing about Tokio Hotel would be they answered "I think by now people get it, but there was always some confusion about how long we have been together. We have been a band for over 14 years, even before we were doing it professionally".

During the recording process sometimes there are things that a band will learn about themselves that can be a bit surprising. Bill comments "Moving out to L.A. and being out here on our own and having control over the whole production was something that we had never done before, so we learned that we could do it on our own without someone telling us how things should be done. It was also interesting in L.A., that no one knew who I am or what I do and I had not had that experience in quite some time. I am used to meeting people who knew exactly who I was, so having this anonymity was a new experience".

When speaking about the influence that living in L.A. had on the recording process, Tom adds "The move to L.A. provided us with new life experiences, prior to that we had nothing new to say, here we were able to be influenced by all of our new experiences and create new stories to share".

Many musicians have been affected by the changes in the music industry over the years. Bill tells us that people downloading rather than buying music has been one of the many changes that has had the biggest effect on the band. He says "When we first came on the scene there was not downloading. Nowadays it is more important to have streams and downloads. I don’t even get all of this. There are so many new rules to follow. I remember we used to have these long lines for autographs and nowadays they don’t even do that anymore. They don’t want an autograph, they just want a selfie (laughs). Autographs are not necessary anymore".

He goes on to say, "When we first started there were music show on TV and talk shows and awards shows to attend, now there are only like one or two award shows to attend per year. So much has changed with the way the world processes music. It is all very different".

Finally, I wanted to know if we are going to see any Tokio Hotel touring here in the States. They replied "Yes, of course. We announced the first half of our world tour in Europe, so definitely be early summer we hope to announce some touring in the U.S.".

We can’t wait! We will have to remember to bring our selfie sticks! If you haven’t already be sure to pick up a copy of Tokio Hotel’s phenomenal new album "Kings Of Suburbia" and keep up to date with the band and the following links below:

Hi there again <3

Tokio Hotel's Bill & Tom Kaulitz Ring in the New Year at the Brandenburg Gate!
Justjared.com article

Bill and Tom Kaulitz of the band Tokio Hotel look mighty fine while getting together for a photograph at a special New Year’s Eve party held at the Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday evening (December 31) in Berlin, Germany.

That same day, the 25-year-old twin brothers were spotted with their bandmates Georg Listing and Gustav Schafer rehearsing for their performance on German ZDF TV show, Willkommen 2015 – die Silvesterparty.

“We gonna celebrate #NewYearsEve with you guys in Berlin,” the boys shared on their Twitter account. “Live at the Brandenburg Gate!”
